{"id":4721,"date":"2000-03-29T19:47:00","date_gmt":"2000-03-29T19:47:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/thales.mit.edu\/bush\/?p=4721"},"modified":"2021-04-16T06:07:46","modified_gmt":"2021-04-16T06:07:46","slug":"evaporative-instabilities-in-soap-films","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/thales.mit.edu\/bush\/index.php\/2000\/03\/29\/evaporative-instabilities-in-soap-films\/","title":{"rendered":"Evaporative instabilities in soap films"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<div class=\"wp-block-cover alignwide has-blue-background-color has-background-dim\"><div class=\"wp-block-cover__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-cover-is-layout-flow\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/thales.mit.edu\/bush\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/SoapFilm.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-5601\" width=\"249\" height=\"373\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"tw-text-wide\">A vertical soap film supported on a rectangular wire frame&nbsp;of height 3.5 cm and width 15 cm drains under the influence of&nbsp;gravity in an unsaturated environment.&nbsp;Evaporation at the top of the film disrupts the film&nbsp;shape, giving rise to a horizontal bump&nbsp;which grows in amplitude until becoming gravitationally unstable and generating a series of sinking plumes of relatively&nbsp;thick film. The plumes penetrate a finite distance into the film,&nbsp;giving rise to a turbulent mixed layer which slowly erodes the&nbsp;underlying region of stably stratified film.
