For the past decade, the focus of my research has been <a href=\"http:\/\/thales.mit.edu\/bush\/index.php\/4801-2\/\">hydrodynamic  quantum analogues<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-image\"><figure class=\"alignleft size-large is-resized\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/thales.mit.edu\/bush\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/jb_rio1.jpg\" alt=\"rio\" class=\"wp-image-3502\" width=\"260\" height=\"194\"\/><\/figure><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\">I joined the MIT faculty in applied mathematics in January 1998, was tenured in 2004 and promoted to full professor in 2009. I received my B.Sc and M.Sc in physics from the University of Toronto, my Ph.D. in geophysics from Harvard University in 1993.\u00a0I pursued my postdoctoral research at\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.damtp.cam.ac.uk\/\">DAMTP<\/a>, University of Cambridge from 1993 to 1997. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"font-size:16px\"><br>My research is concerned with physical mathematics, the application of mathematical methods to problems arising in the physical sciences. My interests lie in physical systems that can be readily observed in either natural or laboratory settings. I thus direct the Applied Math Laboratory in the Department of Mathematics, where particular attention is given to continuum mechanics, the dynamics of fluids and flexible solids. The bulk of my group\u2019s research has both experimental and theoretical components, the goal being to iterate between the two until consistent physical pictures and theoretical models emerge<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-group alignfull\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container is-layout-flow wp-block-group-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center has-text-color wp-block-paragraph\" style=\"color:#a30003;font-size:16px\"><strong><em>\u201cJe parle pour les gens habitu\u00e9s \u00e0 trouver de la sagesse dans la feuille qui tombe, des probl\u00e8mes gigantesques dans la fum\u00e9e qui s\u2019\u00e9l\u00e8ve, des th\u00e9ories dans la vibration de la lumi\u00e8re, de la pens\u00e9e dans les marbres, et le plus horrible des mouvements dans l\u2019immobilit\u00e9.
